WHO defines obesity as a condition of excessive or abnormal accumulation of body fat (medically known as the adipose tissue) to an extent that it impairs Heath and general well-being.

Various groundbreaking studies have been published where scientists have made exponential progress in unraveling the root causes of our body to increase weight. The picture emerging, is that obesity is a complex whole body disease. The pathology of obesity is closely linked with body fat distribution as well as variety of types of adipose tissue dysfunction. Now this plays a clear role in the genesis of many obesity-related diseases. Which include impairments in adipocyte storage and release of fatty acids, overproduction or underproduction of “adipokines” and cytokine.

Obesity is associated with varied morbid conditions, the intermediary mechanisms for dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), heart disease, hypertension, some forms of cancer, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA),non-alcoholic fatty liver disease ( NAFLD), and osteoarthritis, are all interlinked to the vicious cycle of increased body weight.

Considering the Covid 19 pandemic, affecting many from different age groups , it is seen that  obese host yield a unique terrain for disease pathogenesis, resulting in severe form of disease with a poor outcome.

Managing Obesity through Aquatic Therapy that is Safe and an Injury Free medium of exercise.

It’s a no brainer that inorder to lose weight, one needs to have a good balance of diet and exercise.

Both come with its own set of challenges that affect the sustainability of the routine.

With exercises, the major hindrance is joint pain and risk of injury with aerobic, high impact land based exercises. With an increase in body weight, the pressure and overall stress  on the joints are also increased.

Water, being a gravity eliminated environment ensures minimal to negligible weight on the exercising joints which makes it a risk free exercise medium.

Aquatic therapy for weight loss provides a very unique, creative and successful strategy for obese individuals reach their weight loss goals. Research has proved that Obese & overweight population could have large benefits from losing a few pounds.

Properties of water contribution to weight loss:

Viscosity-

The viscosity in water creates a natural drag force which acts like a natural resistance. Thus doing any activities like running, jumping or even normal movements for heavier population is going to act as resisted workout.

Hydrostatic Pressure

Water provides a constant & uniform hydrostatic pressure, this pressure exerted throughout the body improves cardiovascular conditioning by increasing circulation & reducing swelling. There is metabolic waste produced during exercises, now due to this unique feature of hydrostatic pressure the venous return process is also boosted up to clear it. As a result doing any kind of long duration exercises will not produce extreme soreness as they do on land based exercises.

Buoyancy

The body weighs just 1/10 in water compared to land. This reduces the stress on the joints to almost 90% in neck deep water.

We all have experienced after being submerged in water there is a feeling of weightless in water depending upon the water depth. This miraculous effect is buoyancy again a unique property of water.

As buoyancy supports body weight, the overall weight on the joints are drastically reduced making it a safe and injury free medium

Calorie burns will definitely vary from person to person based on overall intensity and duration however Statistics have shown that we can burn potentially more than 11 calories each minute, compared to exercising on land which is approximately 8 calories a minute.

Water can be one of the safest environments for heavy individuals who want to start with weight loss journey.

The core stone of weight loss from decades has been just the right amount of exercise, important to mobilize the stored fats and a healthy diet in addition to good sleep making your mind less stressful.

However currently, only a tiny fraction of people eligible to receive weight-loss treatment are benefiting from them. If you have limited success combining different lifestyle measures to lower your set point, consider, and discuss with your doctor as to whether the diet is proper or are we doing the right exercises to help with your weight loss, in addition to this options for adding weight-loss medications or procedures that can help alter how your body regulates your set point before it’s too late.
